Très bel ouvrage que je recommande. Un pavé très documenté sur ce chef-d'oeuvre du cinéma. Grand Cinéaste. Grands acteurs.
Like the film itself, this book is epic. Huge, hefty, loaded with countless behind-the-scene photos, there's also informative text and interviews. I was afraid that this might only be a coffee table book, but it was just what I was hoping for, a monumental tribute to one of the greatest films ever made. Author, and Leone authority Frayling has given us another masterpiece to enjoy. And yes, there are color images inside as well! Highly recommended.
Look, I appreciate Mr. Frayling and his obsessive obsession with Mr. Leone. I've read all his books and after a while you start to wonder when enough is enough, because a lot of it is simply warmed over versions of previous writing. Now, that said, I happen to love Once Upon a Time in the West. Unlike Mr. Frayling, I was there on opening day and saw the film at its full length many times over the next couple of weeks, as I happened to be working as an usher in the theater where it played to empty houses. The first time, I didn't really know WHAT to think - I'd enjoyed the Dollar films, although it took many years to come around to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, partially because of the circumstances in which I saw it, but mostly because I thought it was never going to end. And that's how this film felt that first time, although I was certainly mesmerized by it, loved the performances and especially loved the score. But seeing it over and over again, I began to realize I was seeing an absolute masterpiece. Then they cut it, and I happened to buy a 16mm IB Tech print of the cut version, and was distressed at what had been taken out of it. So, it was nice when the long version resurfaced and I've certainly owned every home video iteration of the film, including its less than stellar Blu-ray version. That is what we need, an amazing transfer with proper color, timed by someone who actually knows what the film should look like.But back to this exhaustive and exhausting tome. The interviews are fun and interesting, the stills are great, it's a handsome book and worth the dough. I've heard most of the anecdotes before, but still, it's nice to have it all in one place. The only thing I missed, frankly, was a section on the film's critical reaction, its box-office failure, its resurrection. It would be fun to read the contemporaneous reviews, no?Still, if you're a fan of the film or a Leone fan, it's kind of a must-have.
This was a gift for my dad who admittedly is a big Once Upon a time and Leone fan. He loves it. Called me today yo walk me through some of the stuff he learned and sent text with cool pictures. Not sure I have done better on a gift in years
Purchased this for my boyfriend for his birthday. He's a movie critic and just loves all parts of movie making. The book is really well put together with tons of stuff you don't usually see. Art direction layouts, wonderful inside info and the photos are fabulous! If your into westerns, or a movie fanatic in general, you won't be disappointing!
I would have liked more behind the scenes colors pictures.....and sets. It really is a collage of various elements of other classic westerns...
